The Kremlin announced on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not contacted Donald Trump after the weekend assassination attempt on the former American president and that he does not intend to do so, Reuters reports.
Asked whether, following the incident in the US, security measures for Putin will be strengthened, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian president already enjoys the appropriate level of protection.
"Security is already strengthened for obvious reasons, regardless of the incidents," Peskov told reporters. "We can only reiterate the fact that the security of the head of state is ensured at an appropriate level, everything necessary is being done taking into account the international escalation of tensions in general", he added, according to Agerpres.
The Kremlin said on Sunday that it did not believe the US administration was responsible for the assassination attempt on Trump, but accused it of creating the atmosphere that led to the attack.
Trump, aged 78, was participating in an election rally in the city of Butler, Pennsylvania, at the time of the attack. He was on stage for only 10 minutes when he was shot in the right ear and evacuated shortly after by Secret Service agents. The attacker was fatally shot.
Putin has not publicly commented on the incident.
